PORTOFERRAIO
Portoferraio is the capital and largest port of the
island of Elba with a population of circa 11500. The
following localities are part of this district:
San Giovanni, Schiopparello, Magazzini, Carpani, Bagnaia,
San Martino, La Biodola e anche l'isola di Montecristo.
The fortress "Falcone", positioned
on the highest part of the city, was without doubt
the
most powerful medician fortress on Elba. This was the
official residence of Napoleon and his sister Pauline.
The museum houses numerous mementos that belonged to

Villa di San Martino
Villa San Martino, located in the valley
of San Martino, 5 kms from Portoferraio, was Napoleon’s
country residence; The Egyptian Room and the Demidoff
Gallery are worth a visit. (tel. 0565.914688)

closed on Tuesdays. Holidays 9 am – 1 pm.
Free admission to EU citizens under 18 or over 65 years
of age, on showing identity document.
Important Napoleonic treasures are on
display at the Church of the Reverenda Misericordia,
among which the Emperor’s bronze death mask,
found at Sant’Elena by his personal physician,
Dr. Antonmarchi.
A funeral service is held in memory of the Emperor
every year on 5 May.
Historical keepsakes and precious
church plate and vestments are preserved in the Church
of the SS Sacramento.
To the left of the entrance is a votive shrine dedicated
to the men of Elba who lost their lives in the 1915-18
war, executed on the design of Arch. Crott. The three
precious lunettes were painted by Elban artist Prof.
Giuseppe Mazzei, a pupil of Barabino.
The Linguella
Archaeological Museum, in the Torre
del Martello,
at the entrance to the old Port (at the end of Lungomare
Portoferraio), offers a methodical picture of ancient
history, through finds made at the Archipelago’s
main archaeological sites.

Linguella Archaeological Museum
On display at the Pinacoteca Foresiana, housed in
the “Caserma De Laugier”, a building in
the historical centre dated 1603, formerly a Franciscan
convent and now an active cultural and conference centre,
is a collection of XVIII and XIX century paintings,
with works by Signorini, Cannici, Nomellini, Cigheri,
Billivert and other famous artists.
The International Art Center at San Martino (Portoferraio),
5 km from Portoferraio, was set up by Italo Bolano
in 1964. The open-air museum is right in the centre
of Elba in the Etruscan and Napoleonic valley of San
Martino. The Elban artist’s 24 monuments, standing
like totems, harmonize with the ten thousand square
metres of typical Mediterranean vegetation. The artist’s
permanent art gallery in the same area is also open
to visitors.

CAMPO
NELL'ELBA
The chief town, Marina di Campo, is 18 km from Portoferraio,
and has a population of 4400. The main centres are:
San Piero in Campo (altitude: 227 m), Sant’Ilario
in Campo (altitude: 207 m.), La Pila, Cavoli, Seccheto,
Fetovaia. The island of Pianosa is administered by
Campo nell’Elba.

Elba Aquarium
Elba Aquarium – Faunistic Museum
Spread over a covered area of approximately 1000 sq.
metres, there are presently 60 aquariums, containing
over 130,000 litres of water, making it the second
largest in size after the Genoa Aquarium.
At the present time approximately 150 different Mediterranean
marine species are on show, some of which are rarely

RIO
MARINA
A little seaside town, 26.6 km from Portoferraio, with
a population of 2400. The main centres are: Cavo and
Ortano.

There are approximately 1000 exhibits, displayed in
24 show-cases. The museum provides detailed information
on the places of origin of the items on display.
CAPOLIVERI
Capoliveri is a little town in the middle of
the hills, there where beginns the area rich of different
typs of mines, on the oriental side of the island.
Capoliveri is made up of about 3000 people and it is
18 km away from Portoferraio.

This little mediaeval town is situated at an altitude
of 155 metres; 25 km from Portoferraio with a population
of 900.
