It was in 1534, the coasts of Elba were being raided
by the pirate Barbarossa and his Saracens, but it did not matter to two
lovers like Lorenzo and Maria.
That afternoon, it was 14 th July, Lorenzo reached the beach earlier,
Maria looked down for her lover from the top of the path, but she saw a
mob of men disembark from a small boat....
She watched powerlessly the violent fight that broke out; Lorenzo fought
with honor, but exhausted, he was taken prisoner. Maria ran towards the
beach in time to see a pirate ship sail away after having thrown a dying
body into the sea. Recognizing the body to be her lover's, Maria threw
herself into the sea in a last desperate outburst of love.
It is from this ancient fishermen's story that the beach gets its
name INNAMORATA- Lover's Creek.
EVENTS:
Every 14th July there is a historical commemoration
of
the lover's legend and the Challenge of the Shawl:
There is a historical procession through the streets of Capoliveri; the church
bells announce the torchlight procession and the Innamorata-Lover's
Creek is illuminated by a thousand torches.
On the beach of the Innamorata there is a rowing boat race called
the Challenge of the Shawl with four rowing boats that represent
the four districts of Capoliveri (La Torre, Il Fosso, La Fortezza, Il Baluardo).
The race starts from Morcone beach and finishes at the Rock of the Shawl to
win the shawl that Maria left behind. The winning boat nominates the girl who
will impersonate Maria the following year. |
