Agriturismo Strade del Vino

The "Azienda Agricola Le Sughere“, a farm holidays winery, is part of the Etruscan wine road situated on the Montefico mountain, which dominates the town of Rio Marina, in the heart of the mining area at the East Coast of the Elba island. The winery is extended over 40 hectares of land, about 10 hectares of which have a high concentration of grapevines (approximately 6000 per hectare) dedicated to it.

The grapevines are set on a slope disposed with terraces, where the soil is particularly rich of minerals and vegetal fibre remains. On these terraces at the back the mountain descending towards the sea under cork oaks, pine trees and the Mediterranean scrubland, we find the same vegetation that covers the Montefico area. This lucky situation also determines the smell and the taste of the grapes and thus of the wines: taste and bouquet, which evidence becomes even more intense and more particular in the dessert wines, thanks to a progressive method during a natural ripening process.

Our enterprise is a hospitable and authentic “Agriturismo” divided in two typical, reconditioned country houses. Our guests have 9 rooms to choose from; each of which has a bathroom and one is also equipped to welcome guests with handicap. These rooms are set in two typical country houses; renovated paying particular attention to the original state, by using materials and furniture of the late 18th and the beginning of the 19th century.

The country houses are situated in a hilly region at the northern slope if the “Montefico” mountain, on terraces sustained by stone-fences, surrounded by vineyards, hundred-year old cork- and stone-oaks, myrtle, fen-berries and strawberry-trees, where peace, tranquillity prevail and silence is only interrupted by the sounds of the forest. The panoramic view extends itself to the channel of Piombino and in particular to the smaller islands “Palmaiola” and “Cerbioli”.

The resort also has a 14 m x 6 m swimming pool and an easily accessible parking lot. All rooms have a view towards the sea and dispose of a mini-bar, TV and a safe. Thanks to the construction typology of the houses, with thick walls and ventilated roofs, the installation of air conditioning hasn't been necessary. The production of hot water and the heating of the swimming pool and partially also that of the resort are carried into effect by a solar panel system. Breakfast (the restoration service is not yet available) is served in the garden or alternatively in a dining room by the fireplace. Furthermore there is a comfortable conversation area with veranda.

Our "Agriturismo" lies approximately 2 km away from the sea and the village "Rio Marina". It can be easily reached by car; even though the last trait is un-asphalted, the road is nevertheless in a good condition and therefore does not represent a problem, even for normal vehicles. Due to the dense vegetation the climate is ventilated and therefore during summer evenings a pleasant temperature prevails.
