Historical and cultural information about the Island of Elba

Elba is rich in history and culture: from the Etruscans to Napoleon, the iron mines and geology notes

Thousands of years of history, breathtaking panoramas, glimpses, famous people, stories of men and civilization can be found on the Island of Elba's mere 224 square metres. You might be walking along a country path when suddenly you come across a granite goats' shed dating back to prehistorical times, or turn round and notice how the infinite vastness of the sea has become but one with the blue sky.

Going to see a village high up in the mountains is like going back in time, where simple house-museums hold memories of the past, where everybody knows everybody and where the elderly ladies standing on their doorsteps smile as you pass making you feel immediately at home.

Getting to the larger, busier towns and going to see what were once Napoleon's residences not only means relivng the past imperial spleandour, its celebrations and its balls, but also understanding the man's hopes and dreams as he sat in his garden imagining his next victory.

On the other hand, you might want to visit the iron mines where entire generations of men put heart and soul into their work, or a church destroyed by pirates, or a place of worship, or an impregnable fortress, or a tower that stands out proud in the middle of a breathtaking view.

All this, and more, awaits you on the Island of Elba....the choice is yours!
