The summit of Monte Capanne is the highest peek of the island, standing at 1019 metres. On a clear day, the surrounding area provides a spectacular panorama and looking in the seas beyond, one can see the other islands of the Tuscan Archipelago: Pianosa, Capraia, Montecristo, Gorgona and Corsica.
For all lovers of nature and in particular those keen on trekking and bird watching, the island of Elba offers all that can be desired for such excursions.
Following
the numerous paths and tracks, one can discover
a multitude of microcosms, various forms
of endemics, orchids of rare beauty and
a variety of perfumed flora whilst submersed
in an extraordinary panorama.
Here, like in various zones throughout Elba, in particular during the Autumn period, amidst the holm-oak woods hide 200 different speices of mushrooms, amoungst which, the much acclaimed Black Boletus (Porcino nero).
The slopes of Monte Capanne are characturised by antique scrub which, with the passing of time, has been eroded in parts by wind and in consequence, adopted curious formations.
If one pays attention, with some fortune they may be able to spot an isolated group of mouflon or the gracious flight of one of the different types of birds of prey that frequent the skies in this area.
