The Volterraio castle
Just before arriving to Portoferraio with the ferry, we cannot but notice the Volterraio castle. This
fortress built around year 1000, maybe on an Etruscan settlement first used then by Roman, was a
construction wanted by the Pisans, that in 1281 gave the order to an architect to extend it and to
transform it in a fortress. It was then further extended and fortified in 1440, and was one of the few
fortesses never conquered by the Turkish pirates, frequent looters of the island. The castle has been
bought a few years ago by the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago, but unfortunately at the
moment it is in a state of decay. Nevertheless, with due care, it is worth climbing up to the hill to
admire the remaining majestic walls, and to enjoy the unique and stunning view on the gulf of
Portoferraio.
