Curiosities about Elba and the Tuscan Archipelago
Posidonia! ... not seaweeds!
For all of those that love 'wild' beaches, natural beaches where man hasn't intervened, unlike the
ones with bars and beach umbrellas, Elba is a real paradise. There are indeed various beaches with
bathing establishments with beach umbrellas, deckchairs etc, but these are only the bigger ones and
the sandy ones, and anyway also on these beaches there is always a good portion of free beach.
Especially on the free beaches you will probably find stranded those seaweeds that are commonly
seen as algae, but in reality are real plants, that is posidonia. The Oceanic posidonia is in fact a sea
plant that lives in the cleanest seas, and fortunately in the sea of Elba there are a lot of posidonia's
fields! It is a plant very similar to the ones on earth, in fact it has roots, a rhizomatous stem and long
leaves that can be long up to a metre and wide up to 1 cm, which grow in groups of 6 or 7. It
blossoms in autumn and spring producing floating fruits commonly called 'sea olives'. The leaves
that die often come to shore and during the winter this deposit of posidonia is very good for the
coasts because it limits the eccessive erosion of the beaches.
