Curiosities about Elba and the Tuscan Archipelago
Islands with the same name

A small curiosity about the name of two of the island of the Tuscan Archipelago. The islands that constitute the Archipelago are Elba, Giglio (21,2 kmq) - Capraia (19,3) - Montecristo (10,4) - Pianosa (10,25) - Giannutri (2,6) - Gorgona (2,23). The northern one is Gorgona which is in front of Livorno, while the southern one is Giannutri, which is a little bit further south from Mount Argentario, in front of Montalto di Castro in the region of Lazio. In front of the costs of Puglia, north of the Peninsula of Gargano, there is instead the Archipelago of Tremiti. Two of the islands of of this latter Archipelago are called as two of the islands in the Tuscan Archipelago: Pianosa and Capraia. The regions of Tuscany and Puglia have hence two islands with the same name. Even if the islands of Pianosa and Capraia in Puglia are much smaller that the Tuscan 'sisters': not even a square metre between the two of them (Pianosa measures only 700 metres x 250 metres).
