Curiosities about Elba and the Tuscan Archipelago
Aleatico
Vine of Greek origins, was imported by the Romans and then revalued by Napoleon Bonaparte,
who made increase the quantity of it on the island. It is a very particular wine, and it is only
produced on Elba and in Gradoli. Its production is not that simple, since the grapes are left to overripen
on the vine for some weeks. Then, for a variable number of days, they are made to wither on
fruit drying racks exposed to the sun. The alcoholic fermentation is carried on under a controlled
temperature. After this some wine-producing firms make the wine go through a phase of refining in
barriques that lasts about 12-14 months, before the refinig in bottles for an average of 4 months.
With an intense ruby-red colour, it has a pleasant smell of dry fruit and confit. It is very smooth and
warm-flavoured. It goes well with chocolate cakes, with the typical dry patissery of the island and
with the typical dessert Schiaccia Briaca; on its own it is an excellent meditation wine. Unmissable!
It is under way a request for the attainment of the quality mark of origin for this fabulous wine.
