As part of the Bicentenary of Napoleon's death, among the many different ideas and special events that Elba opened the celebrations with, all those fans of the great leader's life, history and culture can take part in a venture that will enable them to discover all the most significant napoleonic places.
The Napoleonic Passport is an enjoyable experience for those who wish to follow the route along the typical places linked to the great leader while discovering the beauty of the island. Included in the passport you will find all 8 different stops and, at the end of each visit, you can ask for the stamp that declares you have been there as you find out the places linked to where Napoleon stayed and was connected with in Elba:
- Palazzina Napoleonica dei Mulini in Portoferraio, the Emperor's official town residence while in exile on the island
- Napoleonic Villa in San Martino in Portoferraio, Napoleon's summer residence;
- Port of Marciana Marina where Maria Walewska, the Emperor's lover, landed and where we also have the Tower of the armed guards that Napoleon visited in 1814;
- MUM Mineral Museum in San Piero: if it is right to say that today Elba's economy is based on tourism, it is also true that the residents in the hamlet of San Piero as well as those along the western coast have lived, and still do, also thanks to the presence of granite and marble; infact we have proof of a note written by Napoleon and dated November 5th 1814 that says "Count Bertrand, I have received your report on the works of the marble quarry in Campo and hereby authorise to order as follows: first of all a chimney for 335 franks, then four vases for 440 franks";
- Paolina beach from where you can admire the tiny island and where, according to the legend, Napoleon's sister loved to sunbathe;
- Sanctuary of Monserrato in Porto Azzurro, that Napoleon visited in September 1814;hematite and limonite
- Island of Elba Mineral Park, considered as strategic by the Emperor after he landed on the island;
- Flag of the Island of Elba, with three golden bees that Napoleon had sewn on his arrival at the port in Portoferraio and hoisted on the Stella Fort on May 4th 1814.
Once the tour is over all the visitors will be given a "visa", and granted the title of official resident of the principality and will then be able to pick up their certificate at the Info Park Area (in Viale Elba, by the port) or at the Gattaia Infopoint (in Via Vittorio Emanuele II) in Portoferraio; another souvenir as part of your collection of heirlooms that all true Napoleon fans must have!
