Il May 5th will be the official opening day of the year dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, and the entire year of 2021 will be the underlying theme of all the ideas and celebrations held on the Island of Elba: enogastronomic feasts, exhibitions, shows, trails with historic scenes along the way as well as book presentations.
The celebrations will start on the day of the bicentenary of the death of the great Emperor, who remained in Elba for ten months and left behind him everlasting and distinct traces. Just like in the past years, a mass will be held in the Reverenda Misericordia Church, followed by a flag-hoisting ceremony and then the banner of the Island of Elba will also be hoisted.
In the summer months that follow many other important special events will take place across the whole territory, some of which are an absolute must like the concerts of the Elba Music Festival of the European Islands (August 26th - September 12th), based on Napolron's love for Haydn; or the Napoleonic week in Procchio (from 22nd to 29th August) with the historical procession, a re-make of the nineteenth century French military camp, including the celebration dinner with a typical nineteenth century menu where the hosts will be dressed in typical costumes of the time; and last but not least the Grape Festival (October 1st), the traditional celebration in Capoliveri that this year will be dedicated in full to the Emperor.
Besides this wide and very varied programme of special events, the ten steps of Napoleon, traditional places just waiting to be seen that follow the Emperor's footprints. Tourists in Elba will be given a Napoleonic passport, that they will have to get stamped each place they stop at, as a souvenir of where they stopped to see all the places on the island this great leader stayed in.
This means you will be able to visit Palazzina dei Mulini, the Villa in San Martino, as with other truly suggestive and legendary places in Elba; your passport will be complete with the stampof the napoleonic heirloom that will remain an everlasting souvenir of your holiday on the Island of Elba.
