On 1 January 2018, the Municipality of Rio was officially established, following the merger of the municipalities of Rio Marina and Rio nell'Elba. The mayors Renzo Galli (Rio Marina) and Claudio De Santi (Rio nell'Elba) initiated the merger process with the Tuscany Region about a year earlier and, after a series of public meetings, a popular referendum was held on 29 and 30 October 2017. The result was positive in both municipalities: 61.2% in Rio Marina and 58.1% in Rio nell'Elba, with 1,251 voters.
Following the referendum results, first the Institutional Affairs Commission expressed a favourable opinion and subsequently the Regional Council of Tuscany approved the related legislative proposal.
