On 1 January 2018, the Municipality of Rio was officially established through the merger of the two municipalities of Rio Marina and Rio nell'Elba. The mayors Renzo Galli (Rio Marina) and Claudio De Santi (Rio nell'Elba) began the merger process with the Regional Authority about a year earlier. Following the conclusion of the public meetings, a popular referendum was held on 29 and 30 October 2017, with a positive outcome in both municipalities: 61.2% in Rio Marina and 58.1% in Rio nell'Elba, with 1,251 voters.
In view of the referendum results, the Institutional Affairs Committee first expressed the same opinion, after which the Regional Council of Tuscany approved the relevant bill.
