Cavo beach in Rio, on the Island of Elba

Cavo is the most famous holiday resort on this side of the Island of Elba.

The beach is about 420 metres long, and goes from the pier to the rocky promontory where the Tonietti Villa stands high. It has a beautiful sea front with palm trees and sculptures.

Due to the erosion caused by the waves it has changed somewhat over the years. The beach consists of fine grain sand that, mixed over the years with tiny grains of the minerals from the mining area, like ocher, limonite and hematite, are more like small pebbles.

Two breakwaters have also been built using flat rocks, where you can lie if you want to sunbathe and admire the crystal clear sea.

There are several facilities available : a bathing establishment with sun umbrella and sun bed hire, and since the town lies right behind the sea front, also several shops, bars and restaurants.

There is a beautiful view of both Piombino and the tiny island of Palmaiola that is only 3 kilometres away.

The beach is the perfect place if you want to spend a pleasant day by the sea, with a relaxing, holiday atmosphere all around you; thanks to the tiny shingle that goes right down to the crystal clear water it is also perfect for families with small children.

It is also a very popular beach thanks to the town with the numerous facilities provided being so close at hand.

Getting to the beach

Since it is right at the entrance to the town of Cavo access is very easy both by car and on foot, and access to the beach itself is also very easy.

It is right next to both where the hydrofoil comes in and where the small tourist port is, and here you can both moor your boat and refuel it.

In summer you can also get to this holiday resort by minibus thanks to the free beach bus service that starts off in Ortano and connects the beaches along this part of the coast.
