The town of Rio Marina used to be called "la piaggia". A long stretch of dark coloured sand that shimmered due to the hematite dust that went from the Tower as far as the Vigneria shipyards
"Sasso" was the oldest part of Rio Marina, where the fishermen and shipwrights lived, and the beach was the most popular place to meet up with friends and chat. Any special event was organised here, the fish for sale was cut here, and the bonfire in honour of San Giovanni was lit here, and this is why the elderly people from Rio Marina are very attached to the memories of this tiny beach.
Today, due to the arrival of tourism and the ever growing need for roads, little remains of the famous "piaggia" of Rio Marina: as well as the beach by the Tower, there is also the non accessible beach inside the port, that is the tiny Sasso beach.
This beach is about 25 metres long and is just off the pier at the northern end of the port.
It consists of stones mixed with dark coloured sand, and despite being so small, it is very popular. Since it is right in the centre of the town, it is easy to get to and very near any facilities you may need.
It faces the Vigneria mine and gets the winds from the east.
How to get to Sasso beach
It is easy to get there right from the town, it lies just past the port behind the north pier that is at the far end.
