Ginepro beach in Capoliveri - Island of Elba

Below what is left of the Ginevra mine

There are three beaches in the breathtakingly beautiful and somewhat wild area on the eastern outskirts of Monte Calamita, where the only buildings to be seen are those used when the mines in Capoliverii were in use: Ginepro,Cala delle Brache and Punta Bianca.

Ginepro beach is right below what is left of the buildings used when the Ginevro mine  was still in use, and has come to be thanks to the leftover stone residues and iron gravel making the area a real treasure chest for mineral lovers.

Most of the beach consists of large stones but a smaller part is made up of shingle mixed with sand, and only this latter part, measuring about 35 metres long, is suitable for sunbathing. What is left of the machinery used for extracting the iron now stands out in silence at the back of the beach making it truly fascinating.

Interesting fact: The plant used for extraction in Ginevro, the only one in the tunnels in Elba, was one of the most important on the island, and visitors can still go in and see it even today. Here the miners went down to the bowels of the earth to extract the minerals (above all magnetite) as far down as 54 metres below sea level.

Very few people go to Ginepro beach, partly because access is somewhat complicated and partly because the type of sand isn't much liked.

Ginepro beach is exposed to wind from the east, and needless to say there are no facilities there.

How to get to Ginepro beach

The best way is by boat, or better still by canoe, from Remaiolo beach; if you prefer, you can ask the staff for permission to walk through the Tenuta della Ripalte, then continue along a challenging path.
