The beach of Lacona sits in the biggest gulf on the Island of Elba that is just under 3 kilometres wide. It faces south and on the horizon you can see the Island of Montecristo ; the peninsula of Fonza lies to the west while the long and narrow Capo Stella promontory lies to the east.
With a length of almost 1200 metres long this makes it the second longest beach on the Island of Elba (the longest is that in Marina di Campo). There are three reasons why it is so popular: the fine, golden sand it consists of, the fact that it faces south, and the fact that it is surrounded by very scenic nature. It is the only beach in the entire Tuscan Archipelago where the dunes have survived over the years and where the sea lily (Pancratium maritimum) grows, with its highly perfumed white flowers.
Further out :the sand gives way to a rocky sea bed rich in posidonia so it is ideal for lovers of deep sea diving.
The beach is perfect for teenagers too because there are many wide, free areas that are in complete harmony with the surrounding nature; for those who wish, there is also a wide variety of water sports to choose from.
It is the perfect beach also for families with small children because they can play safely either on the beach or in the water that is shallow till quite far out, to the point that in some parts it is still shallow even at a distance of ten metres from the beach.
The beach in Lacona is one of the few in Elba where if you want to cool off the shaded area is completely natural and is also just off the beach. There is a beautiful pine grove that runs practically the entire length of the beach where you can rest, play or eat in the shade of the pine trees
There are several bathing establishments on the beach plus a wide selection of water sports you can do if you wish, and you will also find bars, restaurants, diving schools as well as places where you can hire a motor boat, sailing boat, windsurf and boat rentals, and where you can hire a sun bed or sun umbrella. Just off the beach there is also a wide choice of accommodation and facilities for tourists like campsites, hotels, residences, apartments and shops.
Interesting fact:The summer of 2023 saw a a record number of baby sea turtles born in Elba, the nest on the beach in Lacona welcomed the birth of 89 baby turtles.
The beach is easy to get to both by car or by bus. There are various exits along the main road that get you directly to the beach and lead to the car parks.
