Le Tombe beach in Marina di Campo, on the Island of Elba

The somewhat eerie name of Le Tombe beach comes from the fact that there are some Etruscan tombs in the area near the beach; it is however one of the most beautiful of all the pristine beaches in Elba. There are no facilities on the beach, it takes at least 15 minutes to walk down to get to it, longer and more tiring to walk back up, and there are no houses to be seen anywhere, just crystal clear sea, sun and dark coloured shingle to lie on.

It isn't very easy to get to the beach and it takes about 15 minutes to go down (and about 20 to go back up ) with no shade at all, but despite this, it is more than worth the effort because the sweet perfumes of the Mediterranean bush in the air all around you - lavender, rosemary, pink and white cystus - keep you company all the way down.

Suggestion from Infoelba:We advise you to wear comfortable walking shoes for going down the path, and not sandals or flip-flops.

It is the perfect beach for those who don't have a boat but want peace and quiet in a semi deserted environmenteven during the busy summer season.

The beach is about 1 kilometre long, consists of dark coloured stones of different sizes and is divided into two: the larger part is on the left, the smaller one, including some rocks and another tiny beach, is on the right. The one on the right is also called Giardino Beach and and is always very popular among nudists, while if you walk past Punta Le Tombe on the left and follow the beach it leads to Aliva beach.

There are some rocks dotted here and there on the beaches but they are not suitable for sunbathing on.

How to get there

Coming from Marina di Campo, go past Cavoli, Seccheto and Fetovaia, and watch out for a sign saying "via Panoramica" on your right. Go round the bend, and when you get to the open space on your left you can park your car here (there's room for only about ten cars, however). It's more or less at the 16th km along the number 25 main road.
