The bay of Mangani, in the Commune of Rio is an enchanting beach on the northern side, facing west, of the Island of Elba. just south of Monte Grosso.
The beach is only 120 metres long and at the most 21 metres wide so it is very small, and it is set like a jewel in a tiny gulf so it is sheltered from all winds except those from the north west (Maestrale, Tramontana and Ponente).
This nice, quiet beach is surrounded by a rugged and pristine environment, and consists of small pebbles and stones of different colours but there are also some parts that are full of dried posidonia. Access to the beach from the right hand side is a little more complicated because there are some rocks sticking out of the water.
The sea is of a beautiful turquoise colour and is crystal clear, the sea bed is sandy, and there are rocks a little further out so it is perfect if you want to go snorkelling.
Unfortunately the only view you have is that of the horizon because the beach lies deep in a narrow gulf.
North of Mangani beach you have Cala dell'Inferno: narrow and not very suitable for swimming because it consists of large rocks and stones, this gorge is well worth a mention because the sea is crystal clear and the colours you see here are unbelievable.
Mangani beach is often referred to as Cala dell'Inferno.
Access is by sea only, although there is a path that in about 1 hour gets you to Mangani beach from Nisportino beach. There is no shade all along this path, so we advise you not to take it when the summer sun is at its hottest.
From Nisportino it is about 1700 metres by sea, a little less than a nautical mile, so getting there by pedalo, canoe or rowing boat is the perfect alternative for those who are in search of some peace and quiet.
Even in August very few boats moor opposite the beach.
Starting off at the small port in Cavo it's only 3 or 4 miles to Mangani beach. If, on the other hand, you set off from the shipyard in Portoferraio it's about 4,2 nautical miles.
