Pomonte beach (or Le Scalette) in Marciana, on the Island of Elba

In Pomonte, one of the most rugged parts of the Island of Elba, there are three small beaches within 1 kilometre.

The first is Pomonte beach, also called Le Scalette; this is the one you get to at the end of the road leading from the church in Patresi, and that comes to an end right at the beach. To the left, just cross the small bridge and you will see the other two beaches: Relitto and Ogliera.

Pomonte beach is about 90 metres long, is free and is also very quiet and peaceful. It consists of pebbles and granite stones that the waves have made smooth over the years, and the crystal clear water is shallow till quite far out.

If, on the other hand, you prefer rocks, Pomonte is just for you then: to the right of the beach you can lie on the smooth granite rocks of Cala Maestrale and Calello. The latter are very popular among teenagers who love diving off the tiny wharf.

Interesting fact: From early days, the slabs of granite from the Monte Capanne massif, that is rich in this mineral, were loaded down on to the wharf to be worked in the nearby quarries. A very characteristic "Bigo di Forza" (photos in gallery) has been recreated in memory of the past extracion and loading procedures of the granite.

The breathtaking sea bed and the very varied marine fauna have made Pomonte one of the most loved areas among snorkelling lovers of windsurfing a fantastic time in the open sea that is always calm.

And for those who love staying on the beach until late in the evening, nature offers breathtaking dusks as the sun sets behind Corsica.

Getting to Pomonte beach

It is easy to get to the beach by car, just follow the western ring road round Monte Capanne then turn off in the church square and head downwards towards the beach. The car park is just before you get to the beach.

The town of Pomonte is connected both by the public bus service and the Commune of Marciana Marebus service.
