About one kilometer north of the town center and the port of Rio Marina, the Portello Beach is located on the Vigneria coast, a very unique area characterized by the presence of numerous industrial mining archaeology sites.
It is a large beach, about 170 meters of accessible beach, consisting of dark sand and pebbles, with over 300 meters of less accessible coastline due to large rocks. The shoreline is dominated by a high reddish cliff, typical of the beaches on this side of the island, due to the presence of iron-rich minerals and surrounded by rich vegetation.
The water is very clear, especially on windless days or with a light breeze from the northwest.
The view is towards the mainland, from Piombino to beyond Follonica, and includes the islands of Palmaiola and Cerboli.
Being exposed to the east, it is protected from only the maestrale and westerly winds.
No services are available on the beach.
How to reach Portello Beach
Portello Beach is about 1 km from the town of Rio Marina in the direction of Cavo. It is possible to leave the car in the square in front of the Vigneria dock and continue on foot along the convenient pedestrian path that leads to the beach.
