The beach of Reale, whose name probably derives from the Latin «rivus, rivi» meaning stream, opens to the southeast at the end of the homonymous Reale valley, which was once crossed by a stream.
The environmental context is very unique; the beach is indeed located between two mining excavation sites. To the west of the beach, on the Capo Bianco promontory, limonite was mostly extracted; while to the east, on the nearby Terranera Beach, pyrite, hematite, and magnetite were extracted from a small open-air basin just a few meters from the shore, which later became a small freshwater lake.
The beach of Reale is wide and about 110 meters long. It is made up of sand mixed with medium and fine gravel, light and reddish in color. Some shallows in the middle of the bay and along the sides of the beach ensure that snorkeling enthusiasts enjoy pleasant excursions, and for the more daring, there are many rocks to dive off!
The place is frequented by families and people who enjoy being in contact with nature. The sea is clear, especially with the frequent northwesterly winds.
Over the years, the area has been equipped with infrastructure and tourist services that offer various comforts without altering the balance of the natural environment.
For the summer of 2020, the Municipality of Porto Azzurro equipped the beach of Reale with its own umbrellas and deck chairs available to both residents and tourists. The service is paid.
Infoelba recommends: An interesting option is to take an easy excursion along the coast that reaches the famous Terranera pond, about 600 meters away. Along the way, you can still admire the signs of old mining excavations: from the old loading bridges to the entire coast with its unmistakable reddish color where the sparkle of the mineral stands out.
How to get to Reale Beach
Accessible by car along the Porto Azzurro-Rio Marina provincial road, after about 2 km, on the right you will find the sign for Capo d'Arco-Reale, which leads directly to the beach.
On the left side of the beach, there is a dirt parking lot, free and fairly spacious.
The beach is also served by the Marebus service of the Municipality of Porto Azzurro.
