Spartaia beach in Marciana on the Island of Elba

Spartaia is a truly beautiful, sandy beach that sits between Procchio beach and [page id="294]Paolina[/page] beach, and the name probably comes from the numerous "Sparto" (Lygeum spartum) plants that often grow round the edges of sandy beaches. In the past, the fibres from this small, bushy plant were used to make mats and ropes.

The beach is in adeep inlet set like a jewel between two cliffs, and is sheltered from behind by lush Mediterranean bush.

About 160 metres long, Spartaia consists of fine, golden sand, it is also well sheltered because it is exposed only to winds from the south. While half of the beach is free there is a bathing establishment on the other half.

The shallow, sandy sea bed is perfect for families with small children, while the cliffs at either side are perfect if you want to sit back, relax, and do some sunbathing.

When a southern wind is blowing, the colour of the sea is breathtaking, going from turquoise to emerald green.

There are numerous facilities on the beach as well as a bathing establishment, a bar and a restaurant.

Getting to the beach

The beach is approximately 1 km from Procchio; just follow the main road from Procchio in the direction of Marciana and turn off when you see the sign.

There is a car park at the side of the road but during the summer you have to pay; from there a short walk takes you right to the beach.

During the summer months, if you wish you can also get to Spartaia beach thanks to the Marebus bus service run by the Municipality of Marciana.
