Out for a walk in Elba

Elba offers many opportunities for interesting walks. However, there are some risks you should be aware of when bringing your dog along.

The first danger you might encounter are plants called burdocks, which are spikes from certain types of grasses. When dry, they easily detach from the stem and get caught in the fur of animals, entering their eyes, ears, nostrils, or even being inhaled.

The burdock is dangerous because of its “arrow-like” shape; once it penetrates a natural or pathological opening in the body, it never comes out.

The period during which burdocks can be found varies depending on the season: to be safe, you should start being cautious from April and May through to the autumn.

Avoid meadows, but be careful in all areas because burdocks can actually be found and end up anywhere. After the walk, thoroughly inspect your dog and observe any changes: if the dog suddenly starts coughing (even expectorating mucus with blood), sneezing (sometimes with nosebleeds), or shaking its ears while holding its head tilted, it is likely due to a burdock. Contact a veterinarian as soon as possible who will examine the animal and possibly remove the burdock.

Another risk you should pay close attention to during summer walks is that your dog could suffer from heatstroke. To prevent this, it is advisable to take frequent breaks in the shade, possibly giving your dog some fresh water.

Also, keep an eye on the ground you are walking on, ensure it is not excessively hot. After all, you wouldn't want to walk on a scorching surface without shoes either.
