Napoleone Bonaparte - The Exile of the Eagle is a multimedia exhibition that covers various different ways of communicating: drawings, documents, as well as historical and scenographic objects in an attempt to recreate the atmosphere in Elba while Napoleon was in exile here.
From the moment the visitors enter the sixteenth century San Salvatore hall, that was once a Franciscan church, they are accompanied on a suggestive journey that not only underlines some of the most interesting events, several better known and others less, of this unique and important moment in history, but also gives them the opportunity to discover the more intimite and personal aspects of the Emperor.
After the treaty of Fontainebleau, the vast and strong dynasty that the Emperor had built was taken from him, so Napoleon had no choice but to go back to where it had all started: an island in the Mediterranean. A tiny island, Elba, with its cliffs, its centuries old chestnut trees, its winds that seemed to rise up out of the blue, everything so similar to his beloved Corsica. Here, in Elba, the peaceful and relaxing sound of the waves took the place of the hustle and bustle of the Parisian pomps, the glorious battles, the victorious rides on horseback. This is how the leader who stood out more than any others in the history of the 20th century leaves his historical role behind him and lays down his armour, allowing him to give into love and affection, and, we can also say, leave more room for a more human and political way of thinking.
