The Le Conche lake is a tiny jewel in the Mineral Park of the Island of Elba, hidden by beautiful hills on the eastern side of the island. This fascinating place is right in the heart of the major worksite of the bed of the Albano River, in use from 1940 to 1970.
The lake came to be exactly on the bed of cultivation of the mineral yard bearing the same name, known as "Conche" where minerals like limonoids, hematitepyrite and chalybite were extracted, and as they dissolved in rain water, they gave rise to the typical blood-red colour of the water in the lake.
On clear days, when the sky is blue, the colors and reflections of this natural wonder become more intense, with shades ranging from red to violet, and from yellow to orange. Everything is embraced by the green of the lush Mediterranean scrub that grows around the small lake and, as if by magic, suddenly opens up, revealing the lake in all its charm.
