Geological and Archaeological Science Museum on the island of Pianosa

The Geological and Archaeological Science Museum of Pianosa was built out of several of the rooms of the Ex head offices of the prison on the island. The exhibition shows you the history of Pianosa starting from the oldest rocks that date back to approximately 19 million years ago up to the deposits of the last ice age and traces man's steps from the Upper Paleolithic period to the Roman and to the Medieval days. 

The first hall is named "Do not Touch". Here you have various types of minerals that are typical in Pianosa with which visitors can interact. The second hall is dedicated to the geology of the island, its palaeogeographic evolution and its palaeo-environmental reconstructions, all proven by the presence of skeletons of deer

 [img index="7" params="format=m&class=image-l][img]Thefollowing section concerns the Roman period and shows relics found on the island], in particular from the Agrippa Villa and from the San Giovanni Villa that, came from sea relics like the excellent example of amphoras that were found at the bottom of the sea.The The exhibition concludes with the remake of a Roman burial with even an "Offering to Caronte", a coin for the ferryman of souls in the world of the dead and found during the archaeological excavation as well as a medieval funeral, given that San Giovanni was partially reused as a cemetery until the XVIII century. The Catacombs of the VI - VI century, another popular attraction on the island, haven't actually given us any relics suitable for exhibition so they are represented on a board.

Besides four exhibition halls the museum also consists of another five halls that are specifically for educational, leisure and teaching and learning activities: a laboratory, a library/reading room, a microscope room and a conference hall with room for up to 40 people.
