The National Park organizes visits to the archaeological site of the Domizi Enobarbi Roman Villa. You will be accompanied by expert guides so you have access to the archaeological site and also be given information concerning the villa, as well as some informative details also concerning the areas you will visit.

Besides the actual archaeological visit there are also various naturalistic excursions to the Punta di Capel Rosso Lighthouse that is on the southernmost part of the island, some geological trekking and a tour of the nature routes along the island.

Archaeology route

As you go along the rocky cliffs surrounded with the perfumes of the Mediterranean bush that fill the air you will be able to see the remains of a villa that dates back to Roman times: an ancient residential complex that has direct access to the sea and that was once the general headquarters for ships but also for pleasure; it was built in the I century A.D. by the wealthy Domizi Enobarbi family with Nerone as one of their descendants. You will also see numerous archaeological findings that have recently been restored: there has also been consolidation work on three mosaic halls, as well as the "tabernae" areas which, thanks to the geometrical mosaic decorations, have hence gone back to their original splendour. Entry tickets contribute to the upkeeping and cure of the entire area.
Time needed: approximately 40 minutes- Level of difficulty: easy - Ticket prices € 8; free of cost for youngsters and children from 0-18 years of age, the disabled and who is accompanying them.

Archaeology route

The Island of Giannutri is windy and very green and, along with the sea area surrounding it, is entirely within the Tuscan Archipelago Natural Park. Mediterranean bush dominates the Island but you will also see maritime and Aleppo pine trees. Euphorbia plants, juniper and rosemary all blossom there. A true, tiny heavan on earth: 500 metres wide, 5 kilometers in length, you will enjoy and admire it all with a simple walk. Accompanied by expert guides, you will be allowed to leave the "corridor" - the road that connects Cala Spalmatoio with Cala Maestra, the only one you may follow on your own - and thus discover the tracks across the island surrounded by all their wonderful nature.
Ticket prices € 10; reduced to € 5 for children from 5-12 years of age; free of cost for children from the ages of 0-4 years old, the disabled and who is accompanying them. Time needed 1 hour 30 minutes.

Suggestions on suitable clothing and footwear for your visit

Bearing in mind the characteristics of the island and your guided tour we suggest how to behave if you want to be completely satisfied with your visit to the Island of Giannutri:

  • Wear light, comfortable clothing. We suggest you wear a windproof jacket in mid or high season and put on various layers of clothing that you can take off if you are too hot and be prepared for wind.
  • A hat and sun cream are also very important.
  • Remember to bring a bottle of water for when you are thirsty
  • You will also need a small backpack for your water and whatever you bring to eat as well as what you want to take with you (extra clothes, a sun hat, sun lotion, camera, binoculars, notebook, etc).
  • You must always follow the Park Guides' instructions in detail.
