Archery on the Island of Elba

Although Archery is one of the lesser known sporting activities in Elba, its tradition is very deep rooted. Infact since 1996, the year in which the Arcieri del Mare Association was born, this sport has spread very quickly all over Elba: you won't find it easy to find even one person on the island who hasn't tried at least once in his life to shoot an arrow.

The most popular variation in Elba is the so called "tiro di campagna" ("bowhunting") where fitness and movement that are typical of trekking are combined with the actual arrow shooting. The setting is usually in the woods, and you aim at three-dimensional profiles of animals that you don't know where and when will appear along the route. Compared to the more common aiming at a target that comes to mind when most people think of archery, where you aim at a fixed target at a set distance, the one with all the different coloured circles, bowhunting is a sport that is much more dynamic and in close contact with nature, that goes hand in hand with the climate and the territory in Elba.

The "Arcieri del Mare" usually do this sport in spring and in autumn, but if you are a member of an archery club and have a membership card and come to Elba on holiday during the summer do not hesitate to contact them; you will be assigned your own target field or hunting ground near Porto Azzurro.
