Bouldering on the Island of Elba

An advenure between rocks and nature

Climbing is one of the most enthusiastic and adventurous sports, that enables you to have anadrenalin rush as well as unique sensations. Among the various forms we have bouldering, a fascinating discipline that requires great strength, balance, energy and a high dose of concentration.

You carry out this type of free climbing on man-made equipped walls or on natural walls, natural rocks or rocks you can climb up. As opposed to classical climbing, that needs harnesses, carabiners, cords and fixed protection like rock bolts, with bouldering climbers only need a Crash Pad, large protective mattresses at the foot of the wall to soften their fall and to face any extra, more challenging climbs, or spotters, who watch over your movements and who move your Crash Pad when the need arises, in complete safety.

Bouldering is not only physical, but also mental fitness. It's also a good way of relieving your stress built up on a tiring day and freeing your mind of any worries and at the same time concentrating solely on how you move your body. If you do it oudoors, it enables you to make the most of a feeling of peace and quiet that comes only from nature.

The Island of Elba offers a unique and fascinating landscape for bouldering lovers, thanks to the selection and beauty of the evironment therein. Its rock formations found both along the coasts and also in the mountains, offer stimulating challenges for climbers at any level, thus making every experience unforgettable.

The western side of the Island of Elba is the most complete in rocks suitable for climbing, with most of them along the northern side of Monte Capanne and also the southern slopes of Monte Perone, in the woods around the towns of Sant'Ilario and San Piero.

Besides, local climbers, groups of theRock Slave from Tosco Climb and Black Flag Sasso were among the first to register and free some of the main areas suitable for bouldering. However, it must be said that many promising areas, above all along the southern coast, are still to be explored and mapped.

Here follows the list of the most known sites if you wish to go bouldering on the Island of Elba.

The freemasonry

Above San PieroThe car park is available in an open space near the football pitch, and from here you go uphill along a grit track. Here, amidst the wild nature of Elba, you see rocks of granite in the heart of the Mediterranean bush. In general, the entire area above San Piero is perfect for going bouldering thanks to the great quantity of large rocks scattered among the Mediterranean bush .

Indiana Jones

From the town of [page id="586]Sant'Ilario[/page], just follow the road for theParish church of San Giovanni. From here, a track surrounded by woods gets you there, and thanks to its position among the trees, the area is perfect on a summer's day because it offers you a cool area in the shade.

Stone Monsters

Shortly after the Madonna del Monte Sanctuary(that you get to by following the Stations of the Cross of Marciana), a hiking path takes you towards the Masso dell'Aquila and the Condor, two extraordinary rock formations that make up the Stone Monsters of the Island of Elba. The entire area is unbelievable both for the climbing possibilities and the natural beauty within.

The granite rock formations that you find here are both unique and very surprising because they have been sculptured, modelledsmoothed off by the wind, often presenting a surface with "holes". Some of these rocks have an aspect similar to that of a "broken" egg, with one side that is smooth and very round while the other is overhanging, making them all perfect for climbing.

Not only that, the entire area grants you an incomparable panorama, with breathtaking views of the sea that go as far as Corsica and the island of Capraia. This extraordinary scenery makes the climbing experience both unique and unforgettable.
