Running races on the Island of Elba

The irresistable passion of running lovers on the Island of Elba explains why so many teams and sports clubs as well as the many races and competitions have come to exist in the past few years.

Although some of these races however are no longer held - the Longonella, the Tre Fossi, the Laconella, the Marcianella, the Su e Giù per le Cote and the 100 km of the Island of Elba - others have taken their place in the meantime, with more and more runners taking part, a higher competitive level as well as a better quality of the actual race.

To give you an idea, there is the Stracosmopoli, that takes place on a fascinating and challenging route along the Medicean walls in the old part of Portoferraio, and the Maratona dell'Elba, held along the scenic route of the Costa del Sole with departure in Procchio and arrival in Marina di Campo.

As regards trail running there is the Elbatrail "Eleonoraxvincere", probably one of the most difficult races amidst the scenery of Elba, Equally beautiful, especially thanks to the setting in which it is held, is the Miniera in Trail across the mines in Rio Marina.

In actual fact these races are better considered, especially when it comes to the very long trails and races, more a competition against yourself (only very few of those who take part get to the end) whose real aim is managing to get to the end of the race as a "finisher", one who got to the finishing line and where the last ones to arrive have only managed to do so after a lot of effort.

As you race, you run, you walk, you drink and you curse the moment you decided to take part, but once you reach the finishing line you will be so happy that you will forget all your hard work.....and maybe even start planning your next race!
