Running races on the Island of Elba

The overwhelming passion of running enthusiasts on Elba Island has over the years given rise to numerous teams and sports clubs as well as many races and competitions.

Some of these races are no longer held: Longonella, Tre Fossi, Laconella, Marcianella, Su e Giù per le Cote and the 100 km of Elba Island; however, new events have emerged, and over the years the number of participants, the competitive level and the overall challenge have continued to grow.

Looking for ideas? Two of the most captivating events are the Stracosmopoli, which follows a fascinating and challenging route within the Medici walls of Portoferraio's historic centre, and the Elba Marathon, featuring a panoramic course stretching along the Costa del Sole from Procchio to Marina di Campo.

For trail running lovers: Elba Trail, one of the toughest races on the island. Also noteworthy is the Miniera in Trail, held in the evocative setting of the Rio Marina mines.

Although these are races, especially in the case of long-distance runs or trail events, the real competition is often with oneself. The ultimate goal (since only a small fraction of participants is actually competing for victory) is to be a “finisher” – to reach the finish line. Those who cross it last often put in much more effort than the winners.

During a race one runs, walks, drinks, and might curse the moment they signed up – but once the finish line is crossed, the satisfaction is so intense it makes all the fatigue vanish… while already dreaming about the next race!
