There is a new overwhelming passion for runners on the Island of Elba: trail running! More and more people are challenging themselves along paths and trails between the mountains and the sea.
Trail running is a type of running that takes place in pristine environments, immersed in nature, typically on dirt paths, muddy and rugged terrains, ancient mule tracks, forests, rocks, and watercourses, with paved or asphalted sections not exceeding 20% of the total length of the route.
This activity is usually characterized by significant elevation gains, as well as considerable length of the routes: trail running races with a distance of over 42 km and/or 4000 meters of positive/negative elevation gain are generally referred to as Ultra or Ultra-Trail.
Trail running is a sport that combines speed, power, and physical endurance, offering an exciting thrill on the descent.
Fun fact: A specialty that slightly differs from trail running is sky running, which takes place only in high mountain environments with short paved sections (maximum 15%), at altitudes that can reach or exceed 4000 meters.
The opportunity to run freely and outdoors in every season of the year, move through breathtaking natural environments, and explore the enchanting places of Elba is a dream for enthusiasts of this "new" discipline.
Tips for Runners
- Assuming a good athletic preparation, if you decide to take on trail running routes, it's important to develop a serious and thorough training plan.
- Each trail has different characteristics: a continuous succession of ascents and descents, uneven, unstable or muddy grounds, narrow and not easily accessible paths, streams to wade through by stepping on stones or slippery rocks, etc. For this reason, it's important to gather information about the type of route you plan to take, including the length, terrain type, and elevation profile.
- Before tackling a trail running route, it's crucial to carefully prepare the necessary gear: backpack, GPS, poles; always wear clothing suited to the season and the trail, especially when it comes to shoes.
- Always bring the right water and supplement supplies.
After adequate physical preparation and taking the necessary precautions, have fun and enjoy this exciting new experience on the Island of Elba!
