My name is Luca Giusti and, as an environmental hiking guide, I created the SOMARERIA DELL’ELBA: donkey-assisted trekking, assisted activities, education and therapy with donkeys.
With the help of and contact with gentle and docile animals such as donkeys, the aim is to give excursion participants the opportunity to discover the Elban territory from both a naturalistic and socio-cultural point of view. The presence of the donkey facilitates communication.
Along the routes chosen for walks “at the donkey’s pace”, in addition to describing the natural beauty encountered along the way, the history of these places is also told, following a historical journey back in time, from the ancient users of these same paths to more recent times.
The excursions are designed for everyone and are suitable for children and adults of all ages, in terms of the places visited, the themes covered and also the cost of participation.
Donkeys are wonderful animals. Their steady pace, characterised by frequent stops, leaves time to observe the surroundings and allows us to savour the sensations conveyed by the landscape around us. The donkey invites us to embrace slowness; an excellent observer, it follows the paths with caution and wise respect. The donkey’s calm nature is a real remedy against stress. Through assisted activities, participants can approach the donkey and learn to know and care for it. As a first approach, they can stroke it, brush it and play with it. This activity stimulates our ability to manage ourselves, helping us to recognise our emotions, increase empathy and develop respect for animals and the environment.
During the summer period, given the heat, the excursion at the Somareria with assisted activities inside the enclosure is particularly appreciated: a sensory approach to the animal and a short excursion in the woods, discovering the lush Mediterranean scrub that characterises the Elban territory. We will venture into nature and observe how the landscape around us quickly changes from low scrub to dense holm oak woodland. Along the route we will have the opportunity to stop and enjoy the peace and silence of the natural landscape. A simple walk suitable for everyone, along an easy and undemanding path, suitable for families with children and also for elderly people.
