The Love Trail is a scenic walk of just over an hour that leads from the village of Rio Marina to Ortano beach, along the north-eastern coast of Elba Island.
This is a special itinerary that combines nature, mining history and beautiful sea views, adding a touch of romance to the holiday.
When to walk the Love Trail
The trail can be walked all year round, but the ideal period is spring, when the vegetation bursts with colours and scents. At this time of year it is possible to see wild orchids that flower only in this area, as well as bushes of rosemary, numerous lavender plants and, with a bit of attention, also wild chamomile.
From the Torre degli Appiani to the coves below Rio Marina
The route starts from the panoramic road that runs along the sea behind the Torre degli Appiani, in the harbour area of Rio Marina, following a small road open to traffic.
While walking, several side paths branch off down towards the sea and lead to charming beaches and coves: Marina di Gennaro beach, Luisi d’Angelo beach and finally Porticciolo di Rio beach.
Up to this point the route is about 2 km long and, at a relaxed pace, takes roughly 30 minutes of walking.
From Porticciolo di Rio to Ortano bay
After Porticciolo di Rio, the actual path is reached which, from Punta della Madonnella, continues in the direction of Ortano. The track alternates panoramic stretches overlooking the sea with short sections through woodland, before descending to Ortano bay.
This second section of the route is about 1.5 km long and completes the itinerary of the Love Trail.
Traces of mining history
Along the way, the old branches of the paths once used by the miners can still be seen, bearing witness to the strong bond between this area and mining activity.
About halfway along the route there is a detour towards the Monte Fico viewpoint: this is a more demanding climb, but it leads to an exceptional vantage point, where a small ruined hut with three windows overlooking the coast still stands. From here the view opens over the entire shoreline, including Monte Giove, offering a panorama that amply rewards the effort of the ascent.
