Trails covered: no. 119, no. 122
The trail for visually impaired visitors no. 122 is a short yet valuable educational and nature route located on the southern slope of Monte Perone.
The route is equipped and designed to be accessible also to visitors with reduced visual or motor abilities, while offering an interesting and scenic experience for everyone. The trail is also suitable for the use of a joelette, making it particularly appropriate for accompanying people with limited mobility.
A route designed to be accessible
The trail can be reached by car along the provincial road SP 37, which connects Poggio (Marciana) to Campo nell’Elba: at the pass of Monte Perone there is a large pine forest with some dirt lay-bys used as parking areas, where vehicles can be left. The route begins near the picnic area, right after taking trail no. 119.
This is where a short 200-metre path starts, with a very slight elevation gain, accompanied by a continuous handrail that helps visitors with visual or motor difficulties to move forward safely.
The regular walking surface, the tactile signage and the materials used make this itinerary a significant example of an inclusive trail within the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.
A small nature lesson
Along the route there are five tactile lecterns, equipped with raised maps and drawings and Braille texts. Each panel includes a QR code that allows visitors to listen to the corresponding audio guide, making the experience even more immersive.
Each lectern explores a different theme:
- the first introduces the natural environment of Monte Perone and the purpose of the route;
- the next three present some typical plant species of the area: Erica arborea, Pine and Holm oak;
- the last one, located at the panoramic viewpoint, illustrates the protected area and offers a low-relief model showing the shapes of the surrounding landscape.
Into the pine forest, towards a natural viewpoint
The short walk leads to a small panoramic amphitheatre, a rest area with a picnic table where visitors can relax and enjoy the view over the ridge of Monte Perone and western Elba.
Despite its limited length, the trail offers a complete experience: contact with nature, educational content, accessibility and a meaningful example of inclusive outdoor enjoyment.
