Type of scuba diving: sea shoal
Minimum licence required: advanced
Depth: min 27 m, max 50 m
Along the eastern side of Capraia, shortly before you reach Cala Rossa, a large, round heap of rocks that is as high as up to - 27 m gives way to a seabed at a depth of - 50 m. You get there by starting off at the wall of Punta del Turco, then moor just off the shoal.
It concerns one of the most spectacular scuba diving areas on the island, an absolute natural oasis bursting with life: sponges, bryozoans, spirographs and tunicates cover all the walls. The coral-like organisms with their incredible colours shine out if you light them up with your torch while pelagic hunters like large groupers, amberjacks, tuna fish and barracudas dart past in the deep blue water. Medium sized Sea bream and groupers have their homes here so, in the month of April, make sure you do not miss out on the show given by the many black seabream that seem to get together at the top of the shoal to reproduce.
Due to the characteristics of the actual area and the fact that there are many currents here we advise only expert scuba divers tackle the area.
At the end of your adventure you will be able to fully enjoy the enchanting show of Cala Rossa, which is part of the crater of the old volcano that gave birth to the island of Capraia.
