Scuba diving in Giannutri - Punta Scaletta

Scuba diving that all levels of experience can face

Type of scuba diving: wall
Minimum licence required: base
Depth: min 5 m, max 55 m

The buoy is moored at a depth of approximately - 15 m, and the seabed consists of oceanic Posidonia and large surfacing rocks.

If you swim up the hill, at one point you get to a step that clearly sticks out and that then leads on to the sandy seabed. Keep going northwards and you will see a massive wall that is at a depth of - 55 m but that goes up as far as -30 m so we suggest you follow it up until you get to -30 and -40 m and that is when you will see the red gorgonias.

The wall is covered in all the typical coral-like organisms because it is full of ravines and holes of different sizes where forkbeards, redfish, moray eels and lobsters live.

As you scub dive you will see many red damselfish but also pelagic fish like snappers, amberjacks and barracudas, all out on the hunt or at least heading towards the more protected areas of the park.

On your way back up you will swim across the part of the wal above the surface and this will take you back to the plateau that is covered in rocks and Posidonia, and full of fish that are so typical of the area: wrasses, damselfish, sea bream and black seabream as well as pickerels and damselfish where the water is shallower.

In spring you will probably come across some monkfish.

Scuba diving here is suitable for divers at any level because they can choose what depth they want to reach; we suggest they follow the wall down or stop where the rock comes out of the surface because this proves much more interesting.

The passage on scuba diving is taken from the pamphlet "The hidden Archipelago. Scuba diving routes in the National Tuscan Archipelago”
