Scuba diving in Giannutri - Punta Secca

In the boundaries of the Giannutri marine park

Type of scuba diving: wall
Minimum licence required: advanced
Depth: min 14 m, max 55 m

If you do scuba diving here it means you are within the boundaries of the Giannutri marine park.

As regards the mooring point, at a depth of -14 m, head for the open sea and you will come across the wall that suddenly drops down to a depth of - 20/25 metres. Visibility here is almost always excellent because you can appreciate just how the wall drops sheer down as far as more than 50 metres.

On the cliff that goes NO-SE, the coralline reaches its maximum development from -30 metres down, and at the base we have russet coloured seaweed that is rich in organisms that are typical of these formations: porifers, bryozoans and large fans of red and yellow gorgonias, all surrounded by clouds of red damselfish.

Epibiont organisms like bryozoans, serpulidae and basket stars, a species that scuba divers love to photograph, often live on top of the larger gorgonias to the point that they are rarely found elsewhere. Not only that, you may also see lobsters and crayfish in the ravines.

Continue your scuba diving with the wall to your right, and, when it's time to come back up, start swimming upwards along the slope.

In summer you will see many sea hares in the rocky sea bed around the buoy and along the wall that from the surface goes down very quickly to a depth of 1-10 m.

During your scuba diving you will often see the common John Dory, as well as many redfish, forkbeards, groupers and large shoals of fish at any depth, not forgetting snappers, barracudas and amberjacks out on the hunt, depending on the time of year.

The passage of the scuba diving is taken from the leaflet "The hidden Archipelago. Scuba diving routes in the National Tuscan Archipelago"
