The Island of Elba, thanks to its constant winds and breezes as well as its crystal clear water, is the perfect destination if you want to practise one of the most emotional disciplines in the panorama of sea sports:Windfoil and Wing Foil. Both these activities grant you a unique experience that combines sailing with the feeling of flying on the water.
Both Windfoil and Wing Foil share one, basic characteristic: they both use a foil, a special fin that sits under the board, and this enables you to break free from the surface of the water and to keep going in the air, thus reducing the impact on the water to a minimum. This method enables you to fly gently and with delicacy and also means you need less wind when you start to glide; it really only takes about 15 knots to "fly" above the water.
With Windfoil you use a sail not unlike the one you use in traditional windsurfing, but having to use a foil too makes the whole thing even more spectacular, and the fact that the board lifts up from the surface of the water means the experience combines speed with technique and the pleasure of flying.
On the other hand Wing Foil is different because you need a wing that you hold and maneuver free hand, with no wire connection or support. The wing, very light with no stiff parts, is surprisingly easy to use and control which means learning Wing Foil is very easy even for beginners. Even if you're trying this discipline for the first time you can be sure you'll have no fear of gliding over the water, with the wind at your back, even after just a few attempts.
The feeling of freedom that you experience when doing Wing Foil is no doubt unique: your wing is so light so this plus the feeling you're "flying" on the water, grant you moments you will never forget. Speed combined with the strong>feeling of being so light and completely free make you get so attached to this sport that you will never want to be free of it.
