The Festa del Maggio Campese is an ancient tradition that took place in various towns and districts of the municipality of Campo nell'Elba. According to the tradition, on the night of April 30th, the young men would serenade the unmarried girls with a love song, the "Canto del Maggio", beneath their windows. The choir created a charming atmosphere as they made stops at various points where the women lived.
The next day, the girls would give the young singers homemade corolli, which were shared and eaten together in the lively town square, accompanied by music and folk dances.
Today, the festival has been slightly revised and is held every Sunday in May in the four main districts of the municipality: Marina di Campo, Seccheto, S. Piero, and S. Ilario.
The festival day, accompanied by live music and traditional dances, begins with the cutting of the corolli, which are prepared for the occasion by young girls, and are judged by an expert jury that awards a prize for the best cake.
