Portoferraio, the town that hosted Napoleon’s exile for 300 days, celebrates a mass in memory of the Emperor at the Church of Mercy. Costumed performers from Belgium preside over the mass, where, above a sarcophagus, the funeral mask and the hand cast, usually kept in the adjacent small museum, are displayed.
Subsequently, the performers parade through the streets of the town, eventually arriving at the villas where Napoleon lived during his exile on Elba. Every year, Portoferraio organizes a related event on the Napoleonic theme. This year, on the occasion of the bicentennial anniversary of Napoleon's exile on Elba, numerous events will take place to remember the Emperor’s exile.
