Who is Nicola Spinetti
Born and raised on Elba and passionate about fishing since childhood, Nicola Spinetti has decided to share his passion with those who want to discover surfcasting. Thanks to the experience he has gained over the years and the results achieved in sporting competitions, he now guides residents and visitors in the discovery of surfcasting with a simple, practical and engaging method.
His in-depth knowledge of the beaches of the Island of Elba, its winds, currents and seabeds allows him to choose the most suitable location each time, adapting the lesson to the conditions of the day and the participants' level.

Surfcasting lessons at sunset
Lessons generally begin at around 7:30 pm, when the heat of the day gives way to the colours of sunset and the beaches become quieter. This is when surfcasting offers the best conditions and makes the experience even more evocative.
During approximately four hours of activity, Nicola guides each participant step by step, explaining the basic techniques, how to prepare the equipment, how to choose the fishing spot and how to read the sea. Every explanation is immediately put into practice, helping participants gain confidence and familiarity with the discipline.
The lessons can be individual or held in small groups, ensuring constant attention for every participant and allowing everyone to learn at their own pace.
What is surfcasting
Surfcasting is a sport fishing technique practised directly from the beach using long rods and casts capable of reaching the areas where the sea naturally concentrates food and, consequently, fish.
It is not simply about casting a line as far as possible. Surfcasting means observing the sea, interpreting the movement of the waves and identifying channels, currents and changes in the seabed in order to choose the best place to fish.
The most favourable conditions generally occur at sunset, during twilight and in the early evening, when many species move closer to the shore. At these times, fishing also becomes an opportunity to slow down, listen to the sea and enjoy an immersive experience in nature.
During the lesson, Nicola will also explain the main types of equipment used in surfcasting, how to choose bait, the different rigs and the casting techniques, always adapting the explanations to the participants' level of experience.

- Elba's winds: Sirocco and Libeccio affecting the south and west; Mistral and Tramontana clearing the north and west; choosing the fishing spot according to the wind and target species;
- Effective rigs: knots, rig bodies, hooklengths, and choosing sinkers and hooks according to the bait;
- Bait and baiting techniques: storing bait on the beach, keeping bait looking ‘alive’, preventing it from breaking apart, and matching bait to species;
- Casting technique: overhead casting for stability and safety; introductory elements of ground and pendulum casting for technical progression;
- Handling, measuring and releasing the catch: striking, retrieving, using the landing net, handling and releasing fish safely;
- Mindset and safety: preparation routines, lighting and visibility, safe casting spaces and respect for other beach users.
For those who already have some experience, Nicola provides personalised advice to improve casting technique, increase accuracy and distance and refine their ability to read the sea.
The beaches of the Island of Elba
- Procchio and Biodola (north): wide, bright bays with sandy seabeds and channels; striped seabream and gilthead seabream with the Mistral and ‘clean’ water. Wide sunsets make them ideal for practising mindful casting.
- Marina di Campo (south): a long training beach, with an easy-to-read backwash and varying distances between the first and second drop-off; perfect for beginners and families.
- Cavoli and Seccheto (south-west): exposed to the Sirocco and Libeccio, with well-formed waves; ideal for reading holes and corridors, targeting white seabream and sea bass when the water is ‘murky’.
- Fetovaia (south-west): mixed seabeds and crystal-clear water; with gentle waves, the focus is on accurate casting and reading the foam near the headlands.
- Lacona and Margidore (south): wide sandy and pebble bays; with a steady Sirocco, striped seabream, pompano and gilthead seabream can be found at twilight; comfortable spaces for groups of up to six people.
- Sant’Andrea and Pomonte (west/north-west): rugged coastlines with sandy and pebbly stretches; with a moderate Mistral, the water becomes well oxygenated and fish activity increases as the light fades; careful positioning and safety are essential.
- Lido di Capoliveri and Naregno (south-east/east): sheltered bays which, when the wind changes, become ideal training spots for children and families, with manageable sea conditions and clearly visible seabeds.
Note: the fishing spot is chosen on the day to optimise safety, learning opportunities and the chances of encountering the target species, depending on the wind and sea conditions.

You do not need to own any equipment to take part. Nicola provides all the equipment needed for the lesson so that the activity can be enjoyed comfortably and safely.

- fresh bait;
- lighting for activities at twilight and during the early evening;
- an initial briefing on safety rules and respect for the environment;

Practical information
Lessons generally begin at 7:30 pm and continue through sunset and into the early evening, the best time to practise surfcasting and enjoy the beach in a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. The average duration is approximately 4 hours, with the possibility of arranging personalised experiences.
Lessons are available in Italian and, on request, also in English.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, shoes suitable for walking on the beach or rocks, and a lightweight sweatshirt for the evening.

Every activity is organised in full compliance with current regulations and within areas where sport fishing is permitted, choosing beaches and times compatible with swimming activities and the safety of participants.
The lessons promote responsible fishing practices, with particular attention to protecting the marine environment, properly retrieving fishing lines and all materials used, and safeguarding fish species.
