The route of the Grande Traversata Elbana is long whether you choose to end it in Pomonte or in Patresi, and the former is 49,6 km while the latter is 57,7 km.
Bearing in mind that the length of the route is far from short, the different heights above sea level and the fact that there are no stops for resting along the way, we suggest you do the trek in stages
Apart from one or two short parts, the GTE takes place entirely within the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, where camping is forbidden, so if you decide to do it in more than one day you will have to make some short stops or take some brief detours and look for somewhere to spend the night.
Our advice is to divide the excursion into 3 stages. You start off in Cavo then make your first stop for the night in Porto Azzurro then your second night in Procchio where you will easily find a place to spend the night so you can relax and gather your strength, then set off again on this wonderful walk from one side of the island to the other.
Once you get to Patresi or Pomonte you can then stay in one of these small towns in one of the many hotels that more often than not overlook the sea.
The GTE is along the backbone that links most of the tracks on the island so you can be sure you will come up against the numerous routes that enable you to divide the route into various stops and/or personalize the entire journey.
Easy stropping areas along the way if you want to have a sleep are the nearby Poggio (especially if you decide to follow the GTE from Patresi to Cavo) as well as the areas of Campo ai Peri / Acquabona between Porto Azzurro and Portoferraio.
