Tuscany Islands 2016 Walking Festival - spring

The complete and very varied programme of the Tuscan Islands Walking Festival is about to come back with many events to help you get to know the Tuscan islands better, and there are also two new ones waiting for you.

This year, for the very first time, although it is still home to a prison, the Island of Gorgona will be open to the public thanks to an agreement stipulated between the Municipality of Livorno, the Tuscan Archipelago National Park and the Prison Administration of Livorno.

Excursions leaving from the Island of Elba have been organised,(Saturday 9th and Sunday 17th April) and all those who decide to take part will be able to go on a naturalistic trekking excursion accompanied by the Park environmental guides.

Not only that, the recent re-opening of the Castle of Volterraio means you are allowed to visit the fortress that has just been renovated; from here the view of the gulf of Portoferraio is both unique and absolutely breathtaking. The excursion dates are 9th, 13th and 30th April.

As well as several hours of trekking there are also some events that last several days. From 15th to 17th April and from April 29th to May 1st you can also take part in the Grande Traversata Elbana Gourmet; this is your chance to combine your love for walking with the pleasure of tasting some typical specialities from Elba. On the same dates you can if you wish spend a weekend in Capraia , a tour that is dedicated to the historical and gourmet traditions of the island, as well as the incredible beauty of the scenery.

The Tuscan Islands Walking Festival will start on April 2nd with a hike across the mining town of Rio nell'Elba; the economist Franco Becchis will go with you, and he will explain how economy, environment and daily life are deeply connected to the lanes, alleys and paths.
